Let’s Rock Elmo

by dimsumdebutante on September 27, 2011

Occasionally this humble SAHM and her favorite offspring, The Nut, have their socks knocked off by the amazing opportunities New York City life presents them. Last week offered one of those occasions.

We were invited to The Empire Hotel (yes, Gossip Girl fans!) for the launch of PLAYSKOOL’s hottest new toy, Let’s Rock Elmo.

I got to mingle with blogging friends and The Nut probably had the single most thrilling evening of her life.

There were hundreds of Sesame Street themed toys for the children to touch and try.

We had our photo taken (with someone’s fingers over the flash) with a giant Elmo.
We were then ushered into a ballroom to watch a performance/conversation between the real Elmo (puppeteer Kevin Clash) and American Idol host Randy Jackson. It was exciting and hilarious!

Afterwards Kevin walked Elmo around to kiss and greet all of the kids. The Nut was a little nervous but I was awestruck. I will confess that Elmo can be grating for adults, but he is an absolute icon of our children’s time. My baby got a kiss and got to meet the very sweet and funny man behind the furry red guy!

The fun doesn’t end there… A few days later we received this in the mail:

Could there be anything more thrilling than a box covered with Sesame Street faces?

The Nut promptly figured out how to make Elmo sing, dance, and play his drums and tambourine. She interacted with him as though he were an old friend. If her outfit and percussion skills are any indication, they met at Woodstock.

This looks painful, but I promise it was passionate singing!

I think she’s in love.

Review: Baby Gourmet

by dimsumdebutante on September 26, 2011

I’ve said it before. Getting The Nut to ingest a vegetable is should be an Olympic sport.
Fruits are a little easier, but keeping a variety of fresh organic produce on hand, especially when we are on the move, can be tricky.
There are plenty of baby food pouches available these days. While they are generally marketed to babies ages six months and up, I have found that they are amazingly convenient, portable, and appealing for older kids, too.

Some are simple, some combine a couple of different fruits and/or vegetables with grains. Believe me, we have tried them all. If your kid is willing to suck most anything out of a pouch, you want to maximize the ingredients, nutrients, and flavors that you are offering.

Meet Baby Gourmet.

I first sampled one of their pouches at an event a few months ago. Yes, I ate it. It was called Old Fashioned Apple Crisp and I was hungry. You know what? It was good! With real butter and cinnamon in addition to the fruit… yum!

Baby Gourmet offered to send me a variety pack for The Nut to try. Their flavors are a bit more complicated than most with the idea that exposing your child to spices and textures can help expand the palate. Oh, and maybe kids like yummy stuff, too.

Of the nine pouches The Nut tried, she absolutely devoured eight of them. I think her initial attraction was actually to the photograph of the adorable baby on the pouch. But once she gave it a taste, she enjoyed every drop.

Baby Gourmets pouches are a bit larger (4.5 ounces) than other brands, perfect for older toddlers with bigger appetites.

Flavors include:

  • Orchard Apple, Carrot & Prune

  • Juicy Pear & Garden Greens

  • Harvest Pear, Pumpkin & Banana

  • Baby’s Sweet Potato Pie

  • Apple Sweet Potato Berry Swirl

  • Roasted Squash & Fruit Medley

  • Vanilla Banana Berry Risotto

  • Tropical Banana Bliss

  • Old Fashioned Apple Crisp

The only flavor The Nut shyed away from was Tropical Banana Bliss. After she rejected it, I gave it a try. The coconut flavor was very strong. I would have enjoyed it more blended with some ice and rum.
Baby Gourmet products are available at Wal-Mart stores and online!

It’s time to face the truth

by dimsumdebutante on August 18, 2011

I’ve never been a high maintenance girl.

I love my manicures and pedicures and a good massage, but I can sometimes go months between services.

I don’t own a handbag or a pair of shoes that cost over $100 {save my Uggs and Hunter rain boots which are functional for years and years.} I really don’t like shopping at all. Remind my husband to be thankful, would ya?

I’ve paid for one haircut in my life. My mom owns a salon, but more often than not, mine has been done on the porch or in the kitchen. I color my hair once or twice a year for kicks now that I’ve grown out of the Rocket-Fire Red {aka Claire Danes in “My So-Called Life”} phase that I hit in high school.

I don’t watch my carbs or have an exercise regime. I do try to make decent nutritional decisions and stay active. I’ve also been blessed with a six-foot frame that errs on the side of not too hefty, despite obscene amounts of coffee with cream and sugar, wine, and cookies.

I use drugstore makeup and very little of it. I’ve never worn eyeliner or owned an eyelash curler.

But I’m realizing age is creeping up on me. Sometimes I need a massage because my back hurts, not just because I want to feel pampered. I pulled out my first gray hair a few weeks ago. The natural look has probably run its course. My body is getting a little more droopy and my face could use more help that I’ve been accustomed to giving it.

Baby steps, right?

For now I’ve started using a moisturizer twice a day and an eye gel at night. The products made by Mama Mio Skincare came with instructions for 60 second facial exercises to implement, but I don’t think I’m that hardcore just yet.
First of all, I really like the compact packaging. The tubes {roughly the diameter of a quarter} stand upright in my medicine cabinet and hardly take up any space, key when you’re sharing a 5′x7′ New York City bathroom with one and a half people.

You might think that the smaller size would give less bang for your buck, but it really takes just one little pump to deliver the perfect amount. I’ve been using these bottles for over a month now and I’ve hardly made a dent in my supply. A tiny dollop covers my whole face smoothly and feels really lightweight and natural.

The products smell fantastic {lavender and citrus, not perfume}, don’t contain any funky parabens or dyes, and make my skin feel great. I might actually be looking a bit more supple, too.

I figure it doesn’t hurt to give myself a fighting chance against nature. Thank you Mama Mio for making it easy.

She’ll have to wear her catchphrase on her clothing for now.

Notice the whitening knuckles...

Share?!? You want me to share?!?

And I don't want to talk about it.

Insanely soft, adorable, and appropriate t-shirt courtesy of Puppy & Bean.
